An infrared LED shines at the floor and a sensor next to it measures the light that comes back. White reflects a lot, black very little. A comparator (often an LM393) turns this into HIGH or LOW on OUT; a small potentiometer sets where the switch happens.
On the site's line follower, OUT is LOW over white and HIGH over the black line. Check your module: on some the logic is the other way round.
